Understanding the needs of your clients is a fundamental part of doing business. If you operate your business on an international level then understanding your clients is even more important to avoid racial, ethical and language barriers. There are, however, some things you can do to understand your international clients more easily.
Communicating with your clients is of paramount importance, and understanding their needs will help you service them more efficiently. Tools such as email, Skype, text messaging and free online surveys can help you communicate with your client despite being half a world away.
Be aware of time zone differences. If you need to set up a call between yourself and a client, understand that you’ll be the one getting up at 2 a.m. in the morning to make the call. You can’t expect to inconvenience your clients. Conversely, try to be accommodating and understanding if they are trying to reach you when it happens to be the middle of the night in your time zone.
Understanding your client’s customs and business practices will help avoid any misunderstandings. Perhaps in your client’s culture they don’t like to discuss pricing until the deal is nearly done. In some cultures starting off with a hard sales pitch is going to immediately turn off your potential client.
Lastly, be patient. If language is an issue, hire a translator so that there are no misunderstandings. Learning to understand your international clients is not difficult, and the rewards will be well worth the effort.
